Preparing for Your First Appointment with a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

1. Reflect on What Brings You In

Before your visit, take a few moments to think about your concerns. You don’t need to have the “right words”—just consider:

  • Symptoms that are impacting your mood, sleep, focus, or daily functioning

  • How long you’ve been experiencing these concerns

  • Any recent stressors, life changes, or challenges

  • What you hope to gain from treatment (relief, clarity, stability, coping strategies)

Writing down a few notes can be helpful but is not required.

2. Prepare a Medication List

Please bring a list of all current medications, including:

  • Prescription medications

  • Over-the-counter medications

  • Vitamins, supplements, or herbal products

If you’ve taken psychiatric medications in the past, note:

  • What helped

  • What didn’t

  • Any side effects you experienced

This information helps your PMHNP create a safe and personalized treatment plan.

3. Think About Relevant Medical and Mental Health History

You do not need to remember every detail, but it’s helpful to consider:

  • Prior mental health diagnoses or treatment

  • Hospitalizations or significant medical conditions

  • Family history of mental health concerns

  • Past therapy experiences

You are always in control of what you choose to share.

4. Complete Intake Forms Ahead of Time

Intake forms are provided before your appointment and must be completed at least 48 hours in advance. This allows your provider to spend more time focused on you—not paperwork—during your session.

5. Write Down Questions or Concerns

Many patients find it helpful to bring questions, such as:

  • What diagnosis fits my symptoms?

  • What treatment options are available?

  • What are the benefits and risks of medication?

  • How often will follow-up visits be needed?

There are no wrong questions—your curiosity is welcome.

6. Know That You Can Go at Your Own Pace

Your first psychiatric appointment is a conversation, not an interrogation. You are not required to share everything at once. Building trust takes time, and trauma-informed care means honoring your comfort and boundaries.

7. Prepare for In-Person or Telepsychiatry Visits

For telepsychiatry appointments:

  • Choose a private, quiet space

  • Test your internet connection and device ahead of time

  • Log in a few minutes early

For in-person visits in Lake City, FL:

  • Arrive a few minutes early if possible

  • Bring any requested documents or identification
